Guillaume d'Angleterre, version de la légende de saint Eustache, porte un nom d'auteur, Chrétien ; S'agit-il de Chrétien de Troyes ? Question insoluble. M. Holden a choisi de placer ce poème sous le nom de Chrétien. Cette oeuvre de la fin du XIIe siècle, tient du conte moral et du roman d'aventures. Le programme, fort pieux au début tend à s'évaporer, et chemin faisant le récit devient assez peu édifiant. L'édition de M. Holden est destinée à remplacer celle de Förster (1899), qui corrigeait la langue dans un sens champenois, tant Förster était persuadé de la paternité de chrétien de Troyes. Cette édition donne un texte attentivement rétabli d'après les manuscrits.
