Factors influencing the performance in problem solving of Grade 6 learners

This study attempted to determine the factors that influence the performance in solving mathematics of Grade 6 learners in Rosario Central Elementary School, Rosario District I, Division of Agusan del Sur for the school year 2019-2020. The study used a descriptive research design. There were 261 respondents of the study. The variables were the factors in terms of, interest in mathematics, teacher competence, and instructional materials as independent variable and the performance in problem solving in mathematics as dependent variable. The research instrument used were the factors and performance in problem solving in mathematics. The statistical treatment used were the frequency count, percent, weighted mean and regression analysis in analyzing the data.The results show that learners were interested to study mathematics most of the time to sharpen and acquire knowledge in solving problem, the teacher frequently shows competence in imparting knowledge and skills to the learners, evaluate learning outcome, used good teaching strategy and provide remedial teaching to slow learners and the instructional materials such as; books teaching aids, mathematical pictures are available and of recent publication. A greater number of the respondents obtained a satisfactory performance as problem solving is concerned. The findings further show that teacher competence, instructional materials and interest in mathematics significantly influence the performance in problem solving of the learners.A learners’ aptitude for solving numerical problems and fortifying mental ability to analyze and interpret problems is greatly influenced by their interest in mathematics. Regarding the learner’s cognitive and affective domains, teacher competence is a key component in their development. The teaching aids function as an additional component that allows the instructor to successfully transfer knowledge and skills to the student. When it comes to solving mathematical puzzles, learner’s performance in solving problems is influenced by their interest in mathematics, the competency of their teachers, and the quality of the instructional materials. The researcher offered recommendations, foremost among them is to enhance the learners interest in analyzing in solving problem in mathematics through constant practice, the teacher is encouraged to teach relevant topic appropriate for the development of the learners. The school head is encouraged to provide books to teachers with recent publication and for the needs of the learners’ development, and the learners should study their lessons focusing on problem solving in mathematics diligently to improve their performance. Further studies are encouraged to undertake a research similar to this study to verify the validity of its result.
