Sons of Levi to Servants of Christ: The Rite of Ordination of Deacons from 1962 to 2021

ABSTRACT: This article examines the modifications made to the rite of ordination of deacons in the first and second editions of De Ordinatione following the Second Vatican Council. Sacrosanctum Concilium , no. 76 called for the ceremonies and texts of ordination “to be revised.” In fact, the structure and sequence of the rites of ordination were considerably modified, as were all of the gestures associated with diaconal ordination. Most of the texts from the Pontificale Romanum of 1962 were completely replaced and new compositions were added. The levitical typology which had strongly marked the Roman rite of diaconal ordination throughout its history was greatly reduced in favor of numerous associations between deacons and Christ the servant.
