Vila Viçosa - Herzoglicher Palast

View through Europeana Collections
The Paço Ducal ila Viçosa is an important Renaissance building. The palace became the seat of the House of Bragança shortly after 1496. The main building campaign began in 1501 by Duke Jaime around an arcaded courtyard in the Renaissance Romanesque style, a second building campaign extended the complex from 1531 under Duke Teodósio I with a two-storey marble façade with antique pilasters. A monumetal staircase was built here. After the duke's marriage, the pilaster façade was extended. In the 18th and 19th centuries, rooms were added and the old ones were redecorated.
