Il religioso teatino Lorenzo Scupoli (1530-1610) fu uno degli autori spirituali preferiti di san Francesco di Sales, il quale ha forse conosciuto l’autore del Combattimento spirituale durante i suoi studi a Padova. Lo sappiamo attraverso le sue confidenze personali, le raccomandazioni fatte agli altri e le testimonianze del suo amico e discepolo Jean-Pierre Camus, vescovo di Belley. Lo si evidenzia facendo un confronto tra le sue opere e il Combattimento spirituale dello Scupoli. I grandi temi della vita spirituale del teatino si ritrovano nella dottrina del vescovo di Ginevra: diffidenza di sé (umiltà), confidenza in Dio, preghiera e esercizio delle virtù, ruolo della volontà e ricerca del puro amore.
