Characterization and suitability of Ijero (Ekiti State, Nigeria) mica for paint production
View through CrossRef
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to determine the physical properties of muscovite-mica, characterize and evaluate the performance of mica for paint manufacturing.
Design/methodology/approach
This study investigated the suitability of Ijero mica, obtained from Ekiti State, Nigeria, as a raw material for paint production. The mica samples were sourced in the state of Ijero in Ekiti. The Federal University of Technology, Minna’s Material and Metallurgical Laboratory processed the sample using equipment like a polishing machine, jaw crusher, Hammer mill and set of sieves. The sample was then characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The study showed that the Ijero mica has an average particle size of 12.7 µm and is mostly muscovite with a trace proportion of biotite. The physicochemical characterization was done using XRF. The SEM and EDS studies revealed the existence of several elements, including Si, Al, K, Mg, Fe and Ti, which are necessary for producing paint and also add to the mica’s appropriateness for this purpose. According to the findings, Ijero mica is a suitable raw material for making paint because of its composition and qualities.
Findings
Ijero mica is mostly muscovite with a small amount of biotite, having an average particle size of 12.7 µm. Ijero mica is a viable raw material for paint, as evidenced by identifying key components required for paint manufacturing.
Research limitations/implications
The research was based on a mica sample from a specific location and did not address the potential environmental and health impacts of mining and processing Ijero mica.
Originality/value
This study evaluates Ijero mica from Ekiti State, Nigeria, for use in paint manufacture. It finds that the mica is mostly muscovite and has an average particle size of 12.7 µm. The study shows that Ijero mica has economic potential and is a good and appropriate material for paint.
