Exceptions to Hell

This chapter discusses the alternative scenarios from hell’s torments: the idea that there is periodic relief from torment in hell, and the idea that rescue is possible from hell. The first is mitigation: the torments of hell can be interrupted, and periodic relief given to the damned. This idea occurred in Jewish speculation as well as Christian and derives ultimately from Genesis 2:2–3, God’s rest on the seventh day. The second is an end to hell: hell can end if sinners are rescued from it. Another end to hell appears in a related, third strand that presents the idea of forgiveness in the otherworld for some sins, but not the very worst, and explicitly not for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. This is the option of therapeutic suffering, specifically through a fire that gradually purifies and then releases its sufferers to join the community of the saints.
