Aloe vera Tannin Ameliorates Fructose‐Induced Dyslipidaemia and Oxidative Stress in Wistar Rats

View through CrossRef
ABSTRACT Tannins serve as antioxidants in the treatment of several ailments. We assessed the impact of 28 days of continuous intake of fructose and Aloe vera tannin (AVT) on the liver, adipose tissue and lipid profiles in rats. Twenty‐five rats were divided into five groups ( n  = 5). Groups 1–3 received distilled water, fructose at 8 g/kg and silymarin combined with fructose, respectively, whereas Groups 4–5 received 20 and 40 mg/kg of AVT with fructose, respectively. The administration was done orally for a duration of 4 weeks. The liver, brain and adipose tissues were collected and processed for light microscopy analysis. The serum was used to assess hepatic function and lipid profile. The brain and liver were homogenised in phosphate buffer, and the supernatant was obtained for oxidative stress indicators. Pretreatment with AVT at 40 mg/kg significantly increased ( p  < 0.05) liver reduced glutathione and superoxide dismutase activity relative to the control group. A notable elevation ( p  < 0.05) in serum cholesterol and LDL levels was detected in fructose‐treated rats relative to the control group. Nonetheless, pretreatment with AVT considerably ( p  < 0.05) decreased both cholesterol and LDL levels in comparison to the fructose‐treated rats. No significant difference ( p  > 0.05) in antioxidant activity was detected in the brain homogenate between the control and treated groups. The liver, hippocampus and adipose tissues exhibited normal histology in all the groups. In conclusion, AVT mitigated fructose‐induced dyslipidaemia in rats by substantially reducing serum cholesterol and LDL levels. It also augments antioxidant activity in hepatic tissue.

Description:
Pretreatment with AVT at 40 mg/kg significantly increased ( p  < 0.
05) liver reduced glutathione and superoxide dismutase activity relative to the control group.
A notable elevation ( p  < 0.
05) in serum cholesterol and LDL levels was detected in fructose‐treated rats relative to the control group.
Nonetheless, pretreatment with AVT considerably ( p  < 0.
05) decreased both cholesterol and LDL levels in comparison to the fructose‐treated rats.
No significant difference ( p  > 0.
05) in antioxidant activity was detected in the brain homogenate between the control and treated groups.
