The Capture of Christ

In 1509 Lucas Cranach d.Ä. The woodcut “The Capture of Christ” as part of a 14-part Passion sequence (cf. Knöll 2020, Cat. No. 9). Christ is narrowly surrounded by the sometimes grotesquely oversubscribed bunnies. One of them has put a chain around Christ’s neck from behind, a second kicks him sideways against the thigh, a third pulls his hair. In the front on the right is Peter with a drawn sword, who has just knocked off Malchus’s ear. Despite his need, Christ is about to heal the injured man.
