Abstract My visit to Poland in 1990 was in response to an invitation from the Polish Episcopate’s Commission on Dialogue with Judaism. The previous summer, at the invitation of the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, twenty-two Christian seminary professors from Poland had come to Chicago to study Judaica. Catholic priests from Poland studying Judaica at an institution of higher Jewish learning, at our institution, Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, was something that never had been done before in the United States, or in Poland—especially in Poland, though Jews and Christians had lived there side-by-side for a millennium. I had been assigned not only to help design a curriculum and to serve as the chief instructor for this program, but to devise a way to try to overcome layers of prejudices and stereotypes that had developed between Poles and Jews.
