Dom zu Halle an der Saale (Renaissanceumbau)

View through Europeana Collections
From around 1520, the Archbishop of Magdeburg, Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, had the exterior of the older monastery church redesigned by Bastian Binder's workshop (gable crown in front of the roof) and finally rededicated as the collegiate church of the Magdeburg archbishopric in 1523. From 1523 onwards, Matthias Grünewald (Erasmus-Mauritius panel), Lukas Cranach the Elder (altars) and Peter Schro (stone sculptures), among others, created a magnificent interior that is hardly imaginable today.
