The Sacrifice of “Omphala”: Baron von Grimm on the Future of the Opera in France A Tercentenary Tribute to Friedrich Melchior von Grimm

View through CrossRef
For the first time a translation of the well-known document of musical aesthetics of the 18th century — “Letter on Omphale” by F. M. von Grimm (1752) — is published into Russian. Translation is provided with extensive comments and an introductory article, which refutes the popular myth that the “Letter” belongs to the “querelle des bouffons”, and the pamphlet itself is considered in the broad musical and aesthetic context of the era. After moving to Paris in the midst of the ramiste-lulliste querelle, the German writer took the side of Rameau and one of the first openly declared the need for reform of the French musical theater. Criticizing the old repertoire, he attacks the musical tragedy “Omphale” by A. С. Destouches (1701) recently revived on the stage — one of the pillars of the opera canon of Lully. Grimm pays tribute to the literary basis of the opera — to the libretto of A. H. de la Motte, but makes claims to the music of the respected at the time composer. At the same time, unlike the authors of previous critical reviews of the old French opera (la musique ancienne), Grimm condemns not the old-fashioned dances and symphonic episodes, the pretentious manner of performance, but the basis and pride of the Lullist style musical tragedy — its recitative, denying him “musical” expressiveness, that is, the ability to sensitively respond to the poetry. Grimm’s original musical-critical essay contains foresight of the future of the Paris Opéra, as well as valuable observations on the evolution of Parisian musical tastes. Its publication paved the way for subsequent debates about the fate of the national opera in France, primarily for the sharply controversial works of Grimm’s friend J.-J. Rousseau.
