Latouche’s relationship with publisher Jack Robbins led to a career in the early 1940s as a popular song lyricist. His biggest success in this area during this time was “Day Dream,” with music by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington. During this same period, he wrote some songs with composer Walter Donaldson that have only recently emerged. In 1944, he also wrote the lyrics to the operetta Rhapsody, an adaptation with composer Robert Russell Bennett of Fritz Kreisler’s 1932 operetta Sissy. The piece received poor reviews and proved an expensive flop.
