View through CrossRef
The article examines field material from a previously unpublished diary of a scientific expedition to Semirechye and Eastern Turkestan 1891, organized and conducted by Nikolai Fedorovich Katanov (1862–1922). The formation of Katanov as a scientist was prepared by the sociocultural environment in his native village of Askiz, and then in the Krasnoyarsk gymnasium. While studying at St. Petersburg University, Katanov was chosen in Emperor Academy for a complex mission to study the Turkic peoples of Eastern Siberia, Semirechye and Eastern Turkestan, which he carried out alone. The main corpus of travel diaries and records of linguistic and folklore material was not published during N. Katanov’s lifetime.
