Braudel, Fernand (1902–1985)

View through CrossRef
The most influential and decorated “mega‐historian” of the twentieth century brought his vast erudition and elegance to the study of past worlds beyond the confines of academic disciplines and national narratives. His nuanced macro/micro‐perspective, originally Durkheimian, became an alternative to Marxist, Weberian, and neoclassical views of capitalism. In turn, it inspired the world‐systems analysis of Immanuel Wallerstein and Giovanni Arrighi. The historically grounded portrayal of global capitalism as a monopolistic “anti‐market” force could prove Braudel's greatest legacy.
