On the Change in Relations Between Baekje and Silla in the Late 5th and First Half of 6th Century: Focused on a Response to Goguryeo
View through CrossRef
Baekje in the late 5th and the first half of 6th Century had a close cooperative relationship with Silla. For Goguryeo moved southward to attack not only Baekje but also Silla. So, before 6th Century, period of Dongseong of Baekje(r 479~501), two nations made the relationship solid marrying between royal family and responded to Goguryeo together.
After 6th Century, period of Muryeong of Baekje(r 501~523), Baekje operated this political situation independently and abandoned the relationship by recovering itself the former territory, Han River basin area. But it could not defend against Goguryeo’s steady attack unilaterally. So in the last period of Muryeong, it found a way to make a good relationship with Silla again.
In period of Seong of Baekje(r 523~554), it encountered Goguryeo’s attack, especially Anjang of Goguryeo, and lost its recovered territory. So two nations restored the friendly relationship in 540. But this relationship was different with that in period of Dongseong. This broke up in 551 when Baekje went northward. For Silla made the relationship with Goguryeo and occupied that territory.
