Two Bands with Coiling Vines
View through Harvard Museums
Two identical interlacing vines are tapestry woven in dark wool and undyed linen. The coiling vines form medallions containing simple eight petalled flowers inside a border of dots. Areas of plain weave linen separate the two bands of tapestry woven design and appear at the left of the textile fragment. ‘Flying shuttle’ technique creates details of the vines and medallions in supplementary undyed linen wefts.
