White Supremacy and the Black Storyteller’s Narrative Unveiling

View through CrossRef
In this chapter, Browne and Brooks discuss how Mildred Taylor approaches white supremacy in three of her works, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry , The Well: David’s Story , and The Friendship . Browne and Brooks explore Taylor’s depiction of white supremacy by employing a critical content analysis, informed by Critical Race Theory, to examine composite stories within Taylor’s works. Browne and Brooks identify three themes from their analysis: (1) “Boundaries and Place”: The Nature of Inscribing White Dominance, (2) Antiblackness Undermining the Struggle for Humanity, and (3) Acts of Subjugation and Brutality. Through these themes, Taylor provides a counter-narrative to white supremacy, illustrating Black resilience. Furthermore, Browne and Brooks show the ways in which white supremacy continues to place boundaries, promote antiblackness, and perpetuate brutality today.
