A dog sits in front of a picture of a bear with a tankard of beer. The picture rests on some books. Another small picture at lower right, shows a scene with a tethered bear. The dog's paws are resting on a pamphlet which reads 'An/[E]pistle/to/W.Hogarth/by C.Churchill.' The books are titled' Great George Street, A list of the /Subscribers to the North Briton.' and 'New ways to pay old debts...' Printed across bottom. 'The bruiser C. Churchill (once the Rev'd!) in the Character of a Russian hercules, Regaling/himself after having Kill'd the Monster Caricatura that so sorely Gall'd his virtuous friend, the Heaven born Wilkes!....' In 1763 Charles Churchill wrote a poem entitled 'An Epistle to William Hogarth' after arguing with Hogarth. That year the journalist John Wilkes led a campaign against the Prime Minister Lord Bute, who later resigned.
