Guidelines for Selection of Cathodic Protection Systems for Reinforced Concrete

View through CrossRef
Abstract Cathodic protection of the reinforcing steel in concrete is recognized as the only permanent repair of existing corroded reinforced concrete structures. Cathodic protection systems for reinforced concrete structures have been evaluated and monitored on a continuing basis for over 13 years. Numerous types and configurations of systems have been installed on a variety of reinforced concrete structures. With this experience, it has been possible to classify systems and set forth some parameters for use. Guidelines for the selection of an appropriate system for the type of structure are presented. Factors such as structure condition, location, configuration, future life and loading are important considerations. Cathodic protection is suggested for rehabilitation of existing reinforced concrete structures only. Economics, life cycle costs and cathodic protection maintenance are also important in making repair determinations.
