Officer Candidate School, Surface Warfare Officer (Basic) School, and Communications Officer School

In this chapter the author attends Officer Candidate School and completes the Surface Warfare Officer Basic Course, and the Communications Officer and Cryptographic Material Systems courses, all in Newport, Rhodes Island. There, he encounters issues with shaving and receives a shaving waiver while attending OCS. He describes his difficulty with certain classes, challenging incorrect academic teachings, and the interactions with staff and students from better educational backgrounds. In this chapter the author also recalls failing his only naval exam (celestial navigation), and the impact that had on his self-confidence. Finally, the author addresses the John Walker Spy Scandal and the impact it had on the Navy and his assignment.
