Reframing Eusebius-Jerome’s Chronicle

View through CrossRef
Jerome’s Latin translation and continuation of Eusebius of Caesarea’s Chronicle profoundly influenced how the chronology and the overall shape the human past was understood in the early medieval West. This chapter uses Frechulf’s reception of the Chronicle to reveal how he went about compiling the first volume of his Histories, and also takes into account how Eusebius-Jerome informed his sense of time and its progress. Lastly, this chapter argues that by reframing the distinctive graphic layout of the Chronicle as a book- and chapter-driven narrative, Frechulf brought into sharper relief the Eusebius-Jerome’s exegetical emphasis.
