Scheibe and Bach in Leipzig

View through CrossRef
This chapter explores the many ways in which Johann Scheibe and Johann Sebastian Bach interacted during the twenty-five years that they were colleagues in Leipzig. As Thomascantor, Bach would have overseen organ renovations carried out by Scheibe, and Bach examined and played Scheibe's organs. Bach no doubt was aware of Scheibe's inventions. On several occasions, Bach acted on Scheibe's behalf to see that he was properly reimbursed for his work and on at least one occasion, Bach reviewed dispositions Scheibe had proposed to a nearby village church. Bach provided a recommendation for Scheibe's son Johann Adolph, and in 1739 Bach and Johann Adolph, no doubt in the company of Scheibe the builder, visited and played the Trost organ in Altenburg's Castle Church.
