CHAPTER 5 Grammatical loans from Bactrian
View through CrossRef
This fifth chapter examines potential instances of grammatical loans from
Iranian languages into Niya Prakrit, with a particular focus on features likely
adopted from Bactrian. After some preliminaries (§5.1), I first propose that
two appurtenance suffixes were borrowed from Bactrian into Niya Prakrit
(§5.2). Afterwards, I investigate the possibility of structural borrowings on the
basis of two case studies, one about reciprocals and reflexives (§5.3) and one
about the Niya Prakrit preterite formations (§5.4).
