As gramíneas (Poaceae) apresentam uma distribuição cosmopolita, sendo a única família distribuída em todos os continentes, inclusive na Antártida (Kellogg 2015). Seus representantes desempenham papéis fundamentais na flora brasileira (Longhi-Wagner et al. 2001, Longhi-Wagner 2012), encontrados em todos os domínios fitogeográficos e em muitos tipos de vegetação e condições climáticas (BFG 2015).
