“Among Negroes”

Abstract In the 1988 foreword to John Kouwenhoven’s classic study of American culture, The Beer Can by the Highway, Ralph Ellison recalls Gertrude Stein in the sentence, “A can is a can is a can. . . . ” Ellison’s playful riff invokes the underexplored relationship between Gertrude Stein and African America. From her earliest writings, the black voice, body, and experience had an intriguing role in her creative life. Hortense Sanger, Stein’s “dark-skinned” alter ego of the Radcliffe themes, later emerged as Melanctha in Three Lives (1909). After Paul Robeson’s visit to 27 rue de Fleurus in 1925, Stein wrote “Among Negroes,” collected in Usefol Knowledge (1928).
