Legacies

The Coit Tower project and the PWAP had significant legacies for both the individual artists and the city and region. For most of the artists, Coit Tower elevated their professional reputations. In all, Coit Tower artists created more than a hundred public murals through New Deal arts programs. This chapter also treats other artwork in the city funded by the PWAP and later New Deal programs, including those at the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939–1940. This chapter also considers some murals created in the 1930s through private commissions.
