The Origin of the Coit Tower Murals
View through CrossRef
The spectacular murals at Coit Tower resulted from the convergence of four elements—the San Francisco arts community; the influence of Mexican muralists, especially Diego Rivera; the availability of bare walls in the new Coit Tower; and the Public Works of Art Project, the first federal program to provide work relief for artists—all within the larger context of the Great Depression. This chapter introduces all of these elements.
