Solid silver head ornament
View through Europeana Collections
Head ornament for women, consisting of two silver pendants connected by a leather strap. Both pendants have three different silver marks struck on them. Firstly, seven times a round silver mark with Arabic inscription for the city of Tripoli, these are applied as decoration. In the centre a square hallmark with the initials H.B. of the silversmith. At the time this piece of jewellery was made most of the silversmiths in Tripoli were of Jewish origin. Finally, a round silver mark with the coat of arms of Tripoli, which includes a sailing ship (symbolizing Tripoli as a port city), a laurel wreath and a crown.\This head ornament is made of a heavy quality silver. Because the pendants are too heavy to hang in the ears, they were connected by a leather strap that made it easy to wear the ornament on the head. The pendants would hang next to the ears.
