Effect of Aqueous Moringa Oleifera Leaves Extract on Allium Sativum Induced Weight Gain in Adult Male Albino Rats in Higher Doses.

Background: Allium Sativum is the main component present in garlic. It is used as a flavoring agent as well as a traditional medicine for thousands of years. Its overconsumption has become common due to its availability as over the counter preparation leading to toxic side effects when taken in higher doses. Moringa Oleifera leaves extract is safer to use. Leaves of this plant exert strong antioxidant activity against free radicals, therefore, protecting against Garlic toxicity in higher doses. Objective: To evaluate the effects of aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera leaves extract in Allium Sativum induced increase in body weight of adult male albino rats in higher doses.                                                                  Study Design: Experimental study Place and Duration of Study: The present study was conducted at the animal house and Experimental Research Laboratory of Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) Lahore. Methodology: A total of 24 adult male albino rats, 8 to 10 weeks of age were taken and divided into three groups (8 rats in each group). Group A served as a control and received 1 ml /kg of body weight of distilled water via oral gavage for 30 days. Group B was treated with 500 mg/kg garlic extract (0.5ml/kg) for 30 days. Group C of adult albino rats was administered Moringa Oleifera leaves extracts (500 mg/kg) (0.5ml/kg) along with Allium Sativum extract (500 mg/kg) (0.5ml/kg) for 30 days. All doses were given once a day for 30 days. Results: At the end of the study, the body weight of albino rats in Allium sativum treated group was found to be increased and was statistically significant ( p-value <0 .001), and Moringa oleifera did counter the effects of garlic when used in high dose significantly. Conclusion: Aqueous Moringa oleifera leaves extract improves the deleterious effects of Allium sativum in high doses on the body weight of male albino rats.
