View through Europeana Collections
The European Football Championship, Euro 2012, was organized jointly by Poland and Ukraine. The opening match was played at the National Stadium in Warsaw, built especially for Euro in place of the old 10th-Anniversary Stadium. The closing match took place at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev. 14 national teams out of 51 participating in the tournament qualified for Euro 2012. It was an extraordinary event for sports fans and numerous accompanying events were organized around this event. The euro was also popular in schools. One of them, the Secondary School of Arts in Olsztyn, organized a competition to present the teams participating in the competition. The competition was co-financed by the City Hall, which at the same time promoted the created works, offering urban space for exhibition. The main idea was to present the countries participating in the Euro in the form of historic stone statues called Prussian Babes. This time, the replicas of these statues took the form of Euro Baba with elements characteristic of the countries and nations participating in the competition. The results of each football match, obtained by the national teams, were constantly added to the figures, which were very popular with the audience.
