Middleton And Caroline Theatre
View through CrossRef
AbstractThis article explores some of the various ways in which the plays of Middleton and his collaborators were assimilated into Caroline theatrical culture. In doing so, it has sought less to argue that one play was a ‘source’ for another and more to examine the place of Middleton's work within a broader network of intertextual relationships. Like the plays of other Elizabethan and Jacobean dramatists, Middleton's work might be adopted wholesale as a narrative source, but playwrights might also respond to him in a more selective fashion, replaying a particular piece of dramaturgy or a stage image from an earlier play, reworking a narrative or character-related trope, or incorporating fleeting allusions to earlier works within dialogue. Old and new plays were engaged in a mutually informing dialogue.
