This chapter details Ernst Kantorowicz's scholarly engagements from the time of his arrival in the United States until the end of his research year. In 1940, Kantorowicz set out his agenda to obtain support for a research associateship in 1940. His sought to publish three books: (1) Burgundian Studies; (2) a book on a liturgical subject; (3) Studies in Mediaeval learning. This was a highly ambitious program, and only one of the three planned books came into being, i.e., the “book on a liturgical subject” which was entitled
