Í upphafi níunda áratugar síðustu aldar voru sett á laggir samtök eldfjallastöðva um víða veröld. Þessi samtök nefndust World Organization of Volcano Observatories og voru skammstöfuð WOVO. Íslendingum veittist sá heiður að forstöðumaður Norrænu eldfjallastöðvarinnar, Guðmundur Ernir Sigvaldason jarðefnafræðingur, var kjörinn fyrsti forseti þessara samtaka. Sá gjörningur varð til þess að samvinna jókst umtalsvert milli Norrænu eldfjallastöðvarinnar og annara stofnana með sama hlutverk. Má þar nefna stofnanir og háskóla á Ítalíu, í Portúgal, Frakklandi, Bandaríkjunum, Japan og ýmsum Suður-Ameríkuríkjum. ...
