Musso

This chapter evaluates how, on June 30, 1947, after the Sjahrir–Amir cabinet resigned, Soekarno designated four formateurs of a new cabinet: Amir Sjarifoeddin, A. K. Gani, Setiadjit, and Soekiman Wirjosandjojo. On July 3, the new cabinet was announced; Amir became the prime minister and kept his post of the minister of defense. Meanwhile, the Sajap Kiri, “Left Wing,” originally a coalition supporting the Sjahrir–Amir government, through the months following Amir's becoming the prime minister, crystallized and became a more unified body of Amir's own Socialist Party, the Communist Party, Labor Party, SOBSI trade-union federation, and Pesindo. On July 20, three weeks after Amir's cabinet came to power, the Dutch broke negotiations and the Dutch military forces launched an attack against the republic. The chapter then looks at the Renville Agreement; the rationalization in the military; the formation of the Front Demokrasi Rakjat (FDR), “People's Democratic Front”; the Cold War's increasing presence in Indonesia; and Musso's return to Indonesia. It considers the Djalan Baroe, “New Road,” which was a program, a radically new course for the Indonesian revolution that Musso supposedly refined in Prague and brought to Indonesia.
