From a Free Market to a Pure Market
View through CrossRef
Cartels and trade associations organize markets, but not everyone appreciates their organizing efforts. In this chapter, we follow the way wholesale firms in the Swedish pipe and tube market tried to organize their market during the first half of the 20th century—from a cartel formed in 1909 until, having transformed into a trade association, it handled the 1953 Competition Act. In their organizing attempts the cartel met increasing competition from the state, which preferred a market organization open for any seller. We use detailed historical sources to uncover the way wholesalers discussed upcoming challenges and the decisions they made in order to resist the plans of other organizers.
