Orchestra at the Horikawa palace

Right-hand part of the Triptych (cf. KI 7719-1-17 + KI 7719-1-18) ōju Kunisada aratame nidaime Toyokuniga rechrechrech様 rechrechrechrechA women’s orchestra plays in front of high-ranking ladies in the Horikawa Palace. A sumptuously dressed woman sits slightly raised and secluded by the others on a kind of pedestal. In front of her a koto Vor (silk covered wolf board zither). Behind her a young servant. In front of the pedestal is a box on which lies a shō Vor (wind instrument). In the foreground several female musicians: a woman with drumsticks in front of a large drum (cf. KI 7719-1-3, almost identical attitude!), a woman with drumsticks in front of a small drum, next to two women with flutes.
