Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s Neighborly Encounters and the Project of Neighborliness

View through CrossRef
This chapter focuses on Freeman’s project of neighborliness, or the recurrent formations of non-normative kinship bonds which privilege communitarian values over individualism. By staging neighborly encounters in liminal spaces and states in stories including “Christmas Jenny” and “A Village Singer,” Freeman’s regional texts work to transform relationships both within the text and within the nation, reframing the modes by which her readers would recognize themselves and others.
