Le Martyr et l’Ajaccien
View through CrossRef
The Martyr and the Ajaccian, Two Figures of Style in Corsica in the 2010s
In this article, I analyze the relationships among young people in the city of Ajaccio during the 2010s. Starting from an inquiry into the meaning and origin of the endemic insult “martyr,” I propose two ideal types – the Martyr and the Ajaccian – to capture antagonistic styles of social relations. These ideal types shape divergent forms of political socialization, mediate power relations, and influence economic behaviors as well as life choices. They also reflect several social fractures on the island, particularly deep economic inequalities. Finally, I nuance the processes through which the dominant style is produced, in order to better understand the articulation between the Martyr and the Ajaccian, and, more broadly, the social relations among young people in Ajaccio.
