The article analyzes the image of the Soviet commander M.N. Tukhachevsky, which developed during the Civil War. The information basis for the study was a set of publications in the Soviet press in 1918–1923. For the work, materials were selected from the country's central newspapers (Pravda, Izvestia), and regional publications, as well as articles in military magazines aimed at specialists. The methodological basis for writing the work was a combination of anthropological and systemic approaches, the principle of historicism, source study and comparative historical methods. This theoretical set made it possible to track the transformation of Tukhachevsky’s image during the Civil War from a little-known person in the public space to one of the main commanders of the Red Army and statesmen, a symbol of the «revolutionary war» and a military theorist. In conclusion, it is noted that the formation of such an image was not an exception, but a general phenomenon in the “pantheon” of revolutionary heroes of the all-Union scale. The factors that influenced the formation of Tukhachevsky's public image (military successes and the favor of the Soviet leadership) are noted. The article is addressed to specialists in historical imagology, researchers of early Soviet society, the official Soviet press, Soviet military history, and the Russian Civil War.
