Stepford Wives in the Real World

View through CrossRef
The purpose of this chapter is to explore the legacy of The Stepford Wives universe by examining real world directions in the development of artificially intelligent sex dolls. It will consider the social implications of deep machine learning and human-machine intimacy from a posthuman perspective and if will investigate contemporary imaginings about android women on screen focusing primarily on Alex Garland’s 2015 sci-fi thriller Ex Machina, along with the series West World (HBO, 2016 – ), and Humans (AMC, 2015 – 2018), which is based on the Swedish series Äkta Människor (2012 – 2014). What is evident is a significant shift in character representation towards the subjective experiences of the robot women themselves and their position in the text as powerful rape avengers.
