View through CrossRef
в журнале «The Slavonic and East European Review». The article analyzes the treatise of the British Ambassador Lord J. Forbes “Essay on Russia. 1733–1734”, written during his stay at the court of Empress Anna Ioannovna (the original is kept in the castle of the Forbes family in Ireland). The text of the treatise was first published by the American historian Michael Bitter in 2004 in The Slavonic and East European Review. In his essay, Forbes presented a detailed description of the location, natural resources, climate, governance, economy, and customs of Russia, which makes it possible to classify his work as an ethnographic work. At the same time, the perception of what he saw in the host country made it possible to get an idea of the ethnic stereotypes that Lord Forbes had formed about Russia and its people. The author comes to the conclusion that the work of the British ambassador is of an objective nature and expands the ideas of our contemporaries about the era of the reign of Anna Ioannovna.
