The Kyiv School of University-Level Teaching of the History of Architecture and Art: Periodization, Centers, and Line of Personalities from the 19th to the 21st Century

The article examines the school of teaching the history of architecture in Kyiv academic universities from their emergence to the present day, taking into account the global and domestic context. The stages of the formation teaching the history of architecture in Kyiv universities are structured. The peculiarities of the methodology, conceptuality and leading personalities. The study has established that for almost 200 years (1934-2025) in Kyiv there has been a continuous tradition of teaching the history of architecture in higher education institutions. Despite the educational reforms that took place with regularity every few decades, changes in statehood, world and civil wars, the study proves the continuity and consistency of the line of personalities of teachers of the history of architecture and art in Kyiv universities. The study confirmed the contextuality and synchronicity of the formation of teaching and scientific research of the history of architecture in Kyiv universities to the formation of European scientific architectural studies and methods of teaching the history of architecture. Four consecutive periods (1834-1924, 1924-1941, 1945-1991, 1991-2025) and three main centers of the formation and development of the academic tradition of teaching the history of architecture in Kyiv have been identified: Kyiv University of St. Volodymyr in the first period, Kyiv Institute of Arts (NAOMA) and Kyiv Institute of Civil Engineering (KNUCA) in the second-fourth periods. The most prominent personalities who formed a stable and enduring tradition of teaching the history of architecture in Kyiv higher education are O. Beretti, P. Pavlov, G. Pavlutsky, S. Gilyarov (in the first period), S. Gilyarov, V. Morgilevsky, (in the second period), S. Aseev, V. Chepelyk (in the third period), V. Chepelyk, O. Gorbyk, Yu. Ivashko, G. Shevtsova (in the fourth period).
