‘Written after Swimming from Sestos to Abydos’ [May 1810]

Abstract
An analysis of Lord Byron’s act of poetic cultural immersion of 1810, ‘Written after Swimming from Sestos to Abydos’. The poet’s visit to Troy convinces him of the historical reality of the Homeric story, and he acts out a daring swim from myth while there. Both acts of homage generate a sense of historical irony, as the heroic and the modern are contrasted, but Byron’s humour asserts his present existence in reality.
