View through CrossRef
The article examines the impact of the reform of Count Kiselev on the emergence of the peasant riots of 1841-1843, known as the potato riots. A specially created ministry of state property was supposed to improve the general position of the state peasants, which turned into petty tutelage. Based on a complex of historical sources, the authors tried not only to reconstruct the course of events, but also to identify the same type and repetitive features of performances. As a result, the authors come to the conclusion that the main role in the emergence of the potato riots was played by the peculiarities of the mentality of the peasants, as well as the complex system of relations and contradictions in the Russian countryside, which the capital and local bureaucracy did not understand.
