Franz Ehrle e Giovanni Mercati

Since his first acquaintance with Franz Ehrle in 1897, and for almost forty years, Mercati joined Ehrle’s efforts to renew the Popes’ library in accordance with a programme established by Leo XIII. Ehrle was the protagonist of a first phase, coinciding with Leo XIII’s pontificate (1878-1903); Eugène Tisserant (1884-1972) was the driving force of a second phase, under Pius XI (1922-1939), whilst Mercati played a key role during both phases. Ehrle, Mercati and Tisserant marked a time which saw the waning of a time-honoured concept of the papal library.
