Coptic Ostraca in the Tombs of the South Asasif Necropolis1

View through CrossRef
This chapter examines the corpus of Coptic ostraca found in the tombs of the South Asasif necropolis. Archaeological excavations at the South Asasif necropolis yielded 519 pottery sherds or limestone flakes bearing a variety of (mainly) Coptic texts. Of these, 490 pieces originated from the excavations at the tomb of Karakhamun and 29 from the tomb of Irtieru. One ostracon shows the remains of a hieratic text written in a rather proficient hand of the New Kingdom, while another preserves only the beginnings of two lines of possibly a literary text. The chapter describes the drawings on the ostraca as well as their textual genres. It also considers persons identified among the letters and fragments, with particular emphasis on Arkadios.
