THE JOURNAL «PAMIATKY UKRAINY» (1969–1985): ASPECTS OF EDITORIAL POLICY

View through CrossRef
The study is devoted to the examination of the motivational activity of the editorial board of the journal Pamiatky Ukrainy during the years 1969–1985 as a component of editorial policy that was formed under conditions of ideological pressure from the party-state authorities. The aim of the research is to analyze the content and editorial direction of the materials published during this period, against the background of the journal’s long-term functioning within the system of Soviet ideological coordinates. The study identifies the editorial leadership’s dependence on the political system and the extent of the journal’s influence on shaping a normative Soviet worldview among its readership. It is emphasized that the journal’s policy, despite its declared focus on the protection of cultural heritage, often contributed to the entrenchment of simplified or ideologically distorted representations of the Ukrainian past. The novelty of the research lies in a concrete analysis of aspects of editorial policy in the context of its subordination to the political regime. The methods applied include historicism, scholarly objectivity, and qualitative content analysis, which made it possible to identify the thematic orientation of the publications and illustrate its transformation. The study shows that behind the façade of promoting historical and cultural topics, there was a process of ideological construction of the image of the «soviet person». Only with the attainment of independence did Ukrainian society gain the opportunity to critically reassess the content of such publications and to reclaim the right to its own historical vision. Keywords: «Pamiatky Ukrainy», editorial policy, communist ideology, Ukrainian intelligentsia, denationalization.
