Abstract When Montale writes ‘la pii1 veraragione e di chi take’ (“So Igor in cui’), he places silence in a position of central importance in a world where words often no longer express truth. His turning towards silence, as proposed in this poem, is an act of revolt against an impoverished linguistic medium. However, silence is not simply the absence or suspension of speech, a turning away from expression, but is a multifaceted phenomenon with expressive power in its own right, and as such may have many diverse connotations, interpretations, and uses, both positive and negative.
