A Quantitative Comparison of Yogic Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy–Based Mindfulness in Indian Mental Health Practice

View through CrossRef
Mindfulness-based interventions have become integral to contemporary psychotherapy, particularly within Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), where they are employed to enhance cognitive awareness and emotional control. However, mindfulness practices grounded in Yogic psychology have been an intrinsic part of the Indian psycho-spiritual tradition for centuries, emphasizing holistic well-being through mind–body integration. The present quantitative study examines and compares the effectiveness of Yogic Mindfulness Intervention (YMI) and CBT-Based Mindfulness Intervention (CBT-MI) on anxiety, depression, and emotional regulation among Indian adults. Using a quasi-experimental research design, a total of 60 participants were purposively selected and equally divided into two intervention groups. Standardized and validated psychological scales were administered before and after the intervention period to assess changes in mental health outcomes. The results indicated statistically significant improvements in both groups across all measured variables, confirming the overall efficacy of mindfulness-based approaches. Notably, participants in the Yogic mindfulness group demonstrated greater enhancement in emotional regulation, psychological balance, and overall well-being, suggesting deeper affective integration and self-regulation capacities. In contrast, the CBT-based mindfulness group showed comparatively stronger reductions in maladaptive thought patterns and cognitive distortions, reflecting the structured and cognition-focused nature of CBT techniques. These findings highlight the complementary strengths of both approaches and underscore the importance of cultural relevance in mental health interventions. The study suggests that integrative mindfulness models, combining Yogic principles with evidence-based CBT strategies, may offer a more culturally responsive and comprehensive framework for mental health practice in the Indian context. Such integration has the potential to enhance therapeutic effectiveness while respecting indigenous psychological traditions.

Title: A Quantitative Comparison of Yogic Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy–Based Mindfulness in Indian Mental Health Practice
